River Bend Nature Center’s programs address science standards to provide your students with great experiences that supplement their science curricula. Led by experienced naturalist and volunteer naturalist staff in small groups, students will see science come alive through hands-on activities and opportunities to observe and understand the natural world.

Seasons and Senses 1 ½ hours, offered September-May
Visiting River Bend’s forest, prairie, and pond on a hike, students will discover the natural world by making observations with their five senses. They will use these observations to determine what season it is. Visiting in the fall, winter, and spring will allow students to observe changes over time. Includes exploration time in the Interpretive Center.

Humans Are Animals, Too! 1 ½ hours, offered September-October, April-May
Students will compare and contrast plant and animal parts through hands-on interactions with the natural world. This program includes indoor and outdoor activities, and students will even get to meet and touch a live reptile or amphibian! Includes exploration time in the Interpretive Center.

Living and Nonliving 1 ½ hours, offered September-October, April-May
Students will solidify their understanding of living and nonliving things by observing different natural systems at River Bend on a hike, including its forest, prairie, and pond. In each location, students will learn observational skills that foster their curiosity and help them determine whether objects are living or nonliving. Includes exploration time in the Interpretive Center.

Outdoor Skills and Recreation Programs
Students will explore the whole process of making maple syrup, from its history in Minnesota to tapping a tree, evaporating maple sap, and even taste testing the finished product!
