If educating people of all ages and specifically working with elementary students interests you, River Bend Nature Center’s Environmental Educator position will be a perfect fit! Your planning aptitude, creative skills, ability to work with kids, and love for the outdoors will be utilized and expanded through this experience.

The school-year position begins in Late August or Early September and runs through May. The main responsibilities of the Environmental Educations will be executing our elementary aged school programs and serving as lead coordinator in one of the three specific areas listed below. Along with the coordinating role, there are several opportunities to serve as team lead on specific projects.

Lead coordinator and developer for River Bend’s Science Club, home school program, and Animal Ambassador Program.
- Science Club: A monthly program that takes place on early release days for students in the Faribault Public Schools. Science club is an opportunity for students to get a little extra learning at River Bend in. The program involves communicating with the district supervisors to produce and distribute flyers, register students, and coordinate the rest of the program staff to implement and plan the activities. This program sees upwards of 350 students per year.
- Home school program: A monthly program that is designed just for home school families in elementary education. Topics have included: maple syruping, science mysteries, and animal adaptations. The coordinator will be in charge of scheduling staff, contacting parents, and advertising for the programs.
- Animal Ambassador Program: River Bend has a host of animals, both native and exotic, with a variety of fascinating reptiles in particular. These animals require daily care and enrichment. They are used to teach a variety of programs including one animal ambassador program per season. That seasonal program will be coordinated and advertised for by the community outreach specialist.

- Waste Education program description: Coordinate the in-school waste education program River Bend Nature Center completes for Rice County. In-school programs on recycling and waste reduction for various elementary grades in all the schools in Rice County. In-school programs are set up with individual teachers and can take place throughout the school year, but the majority of them occur in January, February and March.
- Crecideno Juntos program description: The Creciendo Juntos (CJ) is a program designed for Latino families with preschool-aged children living in Faribault, MN. As part of their weekly Early Childhood and Family Education (ECFE) meeting, CJ families visit River Bend Nature Center (RBNC). This time at RBNC brings knowledge and direct experience with the natural world into the CJ curriculum. There are 10-15 families that participate in this program each month. Most of the CJ families have recently relocated to Minnesota, where the community, culture, and nature areas are new and unfamiliar. RBNC welcomes these families with similar backgrounds and family dynamics to the Faribault community by presenting natural areas in a safe and non-threatening way.
Lead coordinator and developer for the partnership with the local STEM school. This position will be shared between two staff members.
- STEM School Role: Part of your work week will be spent at the local STEM school working as an on campus naturalist. You will be coordinating with teachers and developing existing and new programs. Previous naturalist-developed projects at STEM have included field trips, weather station and afterschool survival programs. The school you will be working with works to “prepare students to become excellent questioners, scientific thinkers, and responsible citizens, who are able to contribute to the world with confidence and character. We achieve this through student-centered, collaborative and experiential learning, with an emphasis on the environment as an integrating context.”
- School Program Coordination: You will be working alongside the education coordinator to recruit, contact, schedule, provide visit information, and survey school groups.
In addition to the coordinating role, each Environmental Educator will also manage several projects. Incuding:
- Land and facilities management
- Weekend volunteer coordination
- Special events assistant
- Birthday parties
- Scout groups
- Maple Syrup scheduling
- General volunteer coordination
The 2017-2018 School Year Environmental Educator Position begins August 30th, 2017 and ends May 25th, 2018.
Living in Faribault, MN
- Faribault is a town of around 20,000 people
- Faribault is about 50 miles from the Twin Cities metro area, which provides opportunities to attend concerts, professional and college sporting events, including Twins games.
- Faribault is about a 45 minute drive from the Mall of America, REI, and the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport.
- Faribault offers great mountain biking and cross-country ski trails right at River Bend Nature Center, as well as a very active bike and ski club, called The Faribault Flyers.
